Your science fair projects were a hit!! Everyone loved walking around and reading them... and I was so impressed! You all really came through and should be proud of yourselves :)
The lab report is due on Monday, typed please, for those of you who still need to turn them in. The last chapter homework (25) will be due on Wednesday. We will use both of those days to work on lapbooks, which will be due on the last day of class. I will soon put up a PDF of complete instructions for those of you who were absent on days we did components in class. GREATJOB!! I'll see you in class on Monday!!

This Friday, May 4, at 6pm is the Brighton Science/Art Fair, as well as Choir concert!!! Earth Science students need to bring in their science projects before 6pm for set up on the tables in the foyer. Between 5-5:30 is fine, just not last minute or we will not be able to scurry a table in place. If students are not attending the Science Fair in person on Friday night, their completed project needs to be brought into class on Wednesday, May 2. I will keep the projects and set them up on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Kelso has asked our class if each one of us would please purchase and bring in about 24 mini-bottles of water. The ones that are about 8oz each? If we each bring 24 bottles, that should be 200 bottles for the event. (They said last year they went through a LOT--more than 300!) You can bring these with you on Friday night, or send them in with your student to class on Wednesday. I myself will probably get them from Aldi, since they are so cheap there. But I believe Costco sells them too, in larger packs. Regarding the lab report that accompanies the science project, I originally scheduled that due this Wednesday, but I am going to extend the due date until Monday, May 7. Some students are still working on their projects and don't have time to complete the report before Friday. Yet, the lab report is worth 80 points, so please make sure they are doing them neatly and accurately. They should also be typed. There are many samples of high school lab reports online, in case they need more guidance. I also have one on the class website that is fairly simple. Can't wait to see you there, and see these projects!! Conversation opened. 1 read message. Skip to content Using Gmail with screen readers Search Click here to enable desktop notifications for Gmail. Quick update!
Today in class we took an open book test on chapters 15, 16, and 17. That wraps up our water unit!
The next unit will be weather, but we will be interrupted by Spring Break right in the middle, so we're going to try something fun and different for the next two weeks. On Monday, students will break into small groups and prepare a small teaching from the textbook that they will then give to the class on Wednesday. They will be graded on the notes they each prepare for the teaching, and on the teaching they each give to the class-- instead of a quiz grade-- 25 points total. We will do this twice in class, for both Chapter 18 (Atmosphere) and Chapter 19 (Weather). I have asked them to take the time to prepare one small section of the text, for about a 5 minute presentation, and to consider whether they want to supplement their teaching with any handouts, diagrams, illustrations, visual demonstration, or particular notes they want students to take... like a real teacher. They should have time on Monday night and Tuesday, to prepare something small. As listeners, they will be asked to take notes from their classmates' presentations. It's just to shake the routine up and to prevent students from not having enough time to study before Spring Break--or being asked to remember material afterwards. That wraps up class time. Chapter 18 text and vocab homework will be due Monday, 2-26. Chapter 19 will be due Monday, 3-5. Their science fair worksheet with Title, Hypothesis, and proposed Materials and Data Collection Method will be due on Wednesday, 3-7. I explained this all in class today, and have put the handout on the Documents page. Please have them type up these four sections, if possible, or hand write them carefully, and then put your signature on the paper somewhere. This is to make sure you stay in the loop before the first week of May :) There will be no quiz before Break, but if we can squeeze in a short lab on solar energy, I will. Blessings. Quick Update:
Monday's class went well. We started Chapter 15 on Oceanography.
I spent some time updating the calendar page, so you would all know what was going on in February. I also updated the Excel calendar at the bottom of that page. I was sick for a week, as were many other students, so some quizzes and assignments were shuffled around. I apologize for any confusion! Updates as of today are:
Today, students finished the labs that we began on Monday. Some students did a water lab on displacement, and others did two worksheets on waves and the ocean floor. When we finished those, we watched a Bill Nye video on Ocean Exploration. While I do not consider Bill Nye to be reputable Christian education, there were some good moments in there where he explored submersibles that are part of the subject matter for Chapter 15. Some of the basic information was also covered briefly. If students would like to rewatch the clip, it can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_luOEADzuvw&t=1026s I did not collect Chapter 15 homework officially. It will be collected on Monday. The "vocabulary" for this section is only the list of submersibles listed at the bottom of the homework questions. The quiz on chapter 14 will be first thing on Monday, probably about 20 minutes. Students need to study the Tides and Currents information well. They can prepare extra flashcards if they want, as long as they are handwritten. They should study the slides and homework, not the textbook. A couple questions may refer to concepts drilled during lab time. Next week I will be handing out a worksheet for their Science Fair project (due May 4). Because they will have to create a formal lab report for their project, I want them to start thinking through the first sections of that future report--the hypothesis, description, and data collection method(s). I will also have them give this to you for your signature so you can collaborate with them on that plan! |
